Macbeth’s Castle

On a cool but bright February morning a group of 25 set out for Kirkton of Collace, just a dozen miles or so from Perth. Our leader was Allen Bardwell.  The walks took us through farmland to Dunsinane Hill, at just over 1,000 feet and part of the Sidlaws.  The hill is the site of iron age fort and the area is full of history and is of course well known as the supposed site of Macbeth’s Castle. Indeed it is possible to see Birnam wood on a clear day which lies 12 miles to the ESE. After a coffee break at the top of the hill we descended and made our way via Tulloch Ard and Franklyden to Collace, stopping for lunch on route with amazing views over the Firth of Tay and beyond towards the Trossachs. The walk was some 9 miles and everyone appreciated the interesting and varied route that Allen had been able to find.

Cloan Glen

On Sunday 15th April, 28 walkers enjoyed an afternoon's walk from Auchterarder up to Cloan Glen led by Lynn Salvin. The weather was reasonably kind and the showers of late kept away. The route took us up through a well forested Glen with a mix of both conifers and deciduous woodland, with impressive examples of Douglas and Silver Fir. The return route was along a nearby ridge and down to Auchterarder passing close to the grounds of Kincardine Castle. The walk covered around 6 miles and was enjoyed by all as it proved to be new to most of the walkers

Innerdownie

On the Sunday after the AGM (November 6th) a group started from the Castlehill Reservoir near the Yetts of Muckart on a walk led by Trevor Abell.  We were blessed with perfect weather - a lucky break from all the cloud and rain of recent weeks. The walk ran through Woodlands Trust land alongside Glenquey Reservoir and used part of the Reservoir Path that runs through land managed by the Forestry Commission and the Woodland Trust. The walk involved a steep climb up to the ridge than runs more gently up to the highest point of Innerdownie (611 metres), where lunch was takn in the remains of an old bothy.  Views were possible over the Firth of Forth, the Lomonds and the Grampians. A gentle circular downward path took the group back down to the side of the Glenquey and a return to the cars. The walk was just 6 miles, taking a total of 4.5 hours.

A Winter Walk

Cannich Weekend

Over the weekend of 18-19th of September a group of 13 Ramblers set off to Drumnadrochit for 2 days of walking in the Glen Affric area; an area famed for its special beauty. Unfortunately the weather was not as kind as it might have been.  The original plan to do a high walk had to be cancelled when the low cloud and rain made the route unsuitable. However we were all able to do the planned low level walk around Loch Affric, a circular walk of around 11 miles.  The weather did improve and we did enjoy a sunny afternoon. A bonus when we found later it had been raining all day a short distance away at Drumnadrochit. Saturday night was spent at the Loch Ness Inn for an excellent group dinner, with special thanks to Postie John for organising it.

On Sunday, the weather was still misty and very damp, and after taking local advice it was decided to change plans and instead of returning to Glen Affric area to instead travel to the outskirts of Inverness and do another low level walk along the River Ness and the canal. This provided a pleasant morning walk of around 7 miles.

Path of Condie

Despite heavy early rain and black clouds, 14 walkers braved the weather to meet for a new walk of about 7 miles around
the Ochils close to the Path of Condie about 4 miles above Dunning. Fortunately the weather cleared and we all managed to keep dry and even enjoy some sun. The walk included a mix of tracks through the plantations and open moorland on Coalcraigy Hill where great views of Loch Leven and the Firth of Forth were obtained; and later the Lomonds on the way down to Stronachie.

Glen Tilt

On a mostly sunny day Mike Whitehead led 27 Ramblers and visitors on a scenic 10 mile walk up Glen Tilt by Blair Atholl.

Ben Venue

On July 3rd Sue Henderson led 16 walkers up Ben Venue in the Trossachs starting a few miles from the Brig of Turk next to Loch Achray. The weather proved to be a mixed bag with some heavy showers and periods of hot sun, requiring constant manipulation of anoraks and sweaters. The path from the car park led up a steep path through the forest and it was not until we reached the open moorland that we stopped for coffee. The walk up to the summit was reasonably straight forward but was surprisingly wet in the peat areas. There are two summits, separated by a valley, both seem to be of equal height. We had our lunch at the top with amazing views over Loch Katrine, before making the long decent through moorland and forest.
